Place Your Clues
This will be quicker than you'd expect. All clues were hidden in easy spots around the house, like under the sofa or near the computer.
I grabbed some painter's tape to fold and tape the clues. You could also tuck them into envelopes if you prefer. Then, I stuck them in spots that weren't too obvious, making it a fun hunt for the kids.
Time to Start the Fun!
Let's Clue #1 – 門 (Door)
For the first clue, your child needs to cross out the Chinese words at the bottom to find a Chinese character. This Chinese character is 門 (door), pointing to the next clue.
My kids excitedly rushed to all the doors and found the clue taped at the front door.
Clue #2 – 沙發 (Sofa)
For the second clue, have your child match parts of the Chinese character to the correct number box in the table below.
When all the pieces are in place, the next clue will appear.
The answer is 沙發 (sofa). My kids discovered the clue hidden right behind the sofa.
Clue #3 – 電視 (Television)
The third clue is a fun maze. As your child works their way through, they'll cross out any Chinese characters they find. These characters lead to the next clue.
After my kids finished the maze, they found a Chinese sentence: 它通常放在客廳,讓全家一起看。This means, “It is usually in the living room for everyone to watch together.”
My daughter was a bit puzzled at first, so I explained it in simpler Cantonese: “佢通常擺喺客廳,等全家一齊睇.”
She quickly figured it out and ran to the television, where we hid the next clue behind the screen.
If your child needs a little extra help, feel free to translate the clue into English.
Clue #4 – 電腦 (Computer)
For the fourth clue, your child will use the grid to find the next clue.
The clue is: “下 一 條 線 索 是 在 電 腦 後 面” , which means “The next clue is behind the computer.”
The kids ran to the study room and find their next clue behind the monitor screen.
Clue #5 – 鏡子 (Mirror)
For this clue, you'll need scissors and glue. Your child should cut out the blue boxes and place them in the top boxes by number.
After assembling each part of the Chinese character, they'll create 鏡子 (mirror).
My kids discovered the next clue taped to the bathroom mirror.
Clue #6 – 洗碗機 (Dish washer)
This clue is pretty unique and your child will need to use the mirror to read the clue in the reflection.
We have provided English translations in the answer page for additional hints.
The answer is 洗碗機(dish washer) and my kids found their next clue inside the dish washer.
Clue #7 – 浴室 (Bathroom)
For the seventh clue, your child will search for the Chinese characters in the grid by following the arrows.
The next clue is:
你在哪裏洗澡?
Where do you take the bath?
My kids ran to the bathtub right away to find their next clue.
Clue #8 – 洗衣機 (Washer)
Your child will work on a sudoku puzzle to find the eighth clue. Fill in the blanks with numbers. These numbers match Chinese characters that lead to the next clue.
The solution is 洗衣機 (washer), and my kids discovered their following hint inside the washing machine.
Clue #9 – 床 (Bed)
The ninth clue is to crack a decipher code. The goal is to match each symbol to its Chinese character using the key. Use the key to change all the symbols into Chinese characters to read the message.
The clue is “睡 覺 的 地 方” which means “A place to sleep”.
The kids went to their beds for the next clue.
Clue #10 – 垃圾桶 (Garbage can)
The tenth clue is a riddle. Feel free to read it with your child if they need a hand. There's also an answer key with English translations for extra help.
The answer is 垃圾桶(garbage can) – that's where my kids discovered their clue, right on top of the trash can.
Clue #11 – 餐桌 (Dining table)
For the eleventh clue, your child is to complete the crossword puzzle and read the circled Chinese characters that were crossed off. Read them from top left to bottom right.
The answer is: 我在餐桌下面 which means “I am under the dining table”.
Clue #12 – 烤箱 (Oven)
This is the final clue. Your child should collect all four puzzle pieces and match them to the boxes. Follow where each arrow points. The solution is “在烤箱裏,” meaning “Inside the oven.”
The prize is waiting for them in the oven!
