Sagebooks Series 基礎漢字 500 have become incredibly popular among parents abroad.
To truly benefit from these Sagebook series it would be beneficial to provide extra materials that can supplement the reading experience for our young ones.
My kids and I began our Sagebook series journey together. After teaching them one Chinese character a day through the suggested lessons, however, it was clear that we needed additional materials to ensure they fully comprehended each lesson.
To support my children's understanding of every Chinese character, I created some printables and fun activities for them — which proved invaluable!
From these, they began to love learning Chinese so much more as a result, while also having an easier time remembering what they learn with these supplemental resources.
Can you use these resources without the Sagebooks series? Yes! of course! They can be used as stand-alone resources to learn Chinese characters.

Sagebook has a website with official free resources. You can use these resources to help you with your work.
Audio Recordings Download: Cantonese & Mandarin
On the Sagebook HK website, there are audio recordings of all 500 characters in both Cantonese and Mandarin.
These recordings help to familiarize children with the correct pronunciation of each character and provide valuable practice for their listening skills.
If you want to download the MP3s for offline listening, simply right-click on the page source and find the corresponding files.
There are 25 separate MP3s per language selection—Cantonese or Mandarin—each representing a single book. Now you're all set for enjoyable learning at your leisure!
Sagebooks Read-Along App: Mandarin Only
There's an app that also helps you teach your child throughout the lessons. On the first page of each lesson, there's a QR code that you can use to scan using the app which will allow you to play the audio for the lesson.
Unfortunately, they do not have Cantonese audio and only Mandarin audio is available.
They also have a feature where you can keep track of the progress with daily and weekly schedules.
My Review of the App
I did not use the app because it does not have Cantonese audio. This audio has some mistakes. It does not have all audio for some of the pages for some lessons.
I only suggest that parents use this app if they need help figuring out how to read the lessons by scanning a QR code.
