How to Prepare?
Before we get started, let's look at the supply list you will need for our preschool weather chart activity.
Materials
- Printer
- Scissors
- White card stock paper
- Brass fastener
- Laminator pouches
- Laminator
- Clear Velcro dots
- Clothes pin
- Double-sided tape
- Push pin
Instructions
1. Download
Download the weather chart printable. The free printable will be available in your mailbox once you have signed up for the newsletter subscription. Select your preferred language for download.
2. Open
Open the files with Adobe PDF Reader. You can download it for free.
3. Print
You can print the file by clicking on the “Printer” icon after opening it in Adobe PDF Reader. Select pages 1-2.
Verify that it will print in portrait mode and choose “fit” from the page sizing & handling session.
Print with white card stock paper.
4. Cut
Cut out the images (weather wheel, window button, and arrow) on page 2.
5. Laminate
Use laminator pouches to insert page 1 and images on page 2. Then, laminate them using a laminator.
For heavier weight and extra durability, I use five mil laminator pouches.
6. Cut again
Cut out the laminated images (weather wheel, window button, and arrow) once more.
7. Weather Wheel – Poke a Hole
Poke a hole using a push pin in the middle of the weather wheel on both pages.
8. Weather Wheel – Attach with Brass Fastener
Attach a brass fastener inside the hole of the weather wheel you just punched and attach it to the first page.
9. Wind Bar
Stick the 3 rough sides of clear Velcro dots (hook) above the “Calm”, “Breezy” and “Windy” descriptions. This is where your child will be placing the “wind” button.
Place the clear Velcro dot's soft side (loop) onto the back of the “wind” button.
10. Thermometer
Attach the arrow with double-sided tape onto a clothespin.
How to Present the Weather Chart Activity?
The best way to introduce preschoolers to the weather chart activity is to have them observe the weather around them.
Point out different types of weather such as sunny days, cloudy days, or rainy days.
Ask questions about what they notice about the changing weather and encourage them to look at the chart and match what they see outside with the corresponding illustrations.
The Weather Wheel
Use the weather wheel to match what is seen outside with corresponding illustrations on the chart.
The Temperature Arrow
Encourage your child to use the arrow-shaped clothespin and attach it to the weather chart to show what the outdoor temperature is.
The Wind bar
Place the wind button above descriptions of “Calm”, “Breezy” and “Windy”.
